Microscopic (Atypical) Colitis

• It is a disease that progresses with chronic watery diarrhea, macroscopically normal colonic mucosa, microscopically lymphocyte-dominated inflammation is detected, and consists of 2 separate entities as lymphocytic colitis or collagenous colitis.

• In collagenous colitis, there is thickening of the subepithelial collagen layer in addition to lymphocytic inflammation.

It is generally seen in middle-aged women.

• May be associated with PPI, H2RA and NSAID use in some patients.

• Diagnosis is made by biopsy taken from the proximal colon.

• Topical budesonide and 5-ASA are used in the treatment.
