Wernicke's Encephalopathy:
It is a picture of alcohol-induced encephalopathy.
The reason is thiamine deficiency. It is acutely developed.
It is completely reversible with treatment.
Ataxia, horizontal nystagmus, confusion and ophthalmoplegia are seen.
It is a table that can regress in days or weeks.
If left untreated, Korsakoff syndrome may develop.
Korsakoff Syndrome
It is a chronic alcohol-induced amnestic disorder.
The reason is thiamine deficiency.
Only about 20% of patients recover.
In addition to Wernicke's encephalopathy, there is amnesia + confabulation.
In Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, the first and most affected area in the brain is the corpus mamillare.
