Wernicke Korsakoff Syndrome

Wernicke's Encephalopathy:

 It is a picture of alcohol-induced encephalopathy.

 The reason is thiamine deficiency. It is acutely developed.

 It is completely reversible with treatment.

 Ataxia, horizontal nystagmus, confusion and ophthalmoplegia are seen.

 It is a table that can regress in days or weeks.

 If left untreated, Korsakoff syndrome may develop.


Korsakoff Syndrome

It is a chronic alcohol-induced amnestic disorder.

 The reason is thiamine deficiency.

 Only about 20% of patients recover.

 In addition to Wernicke's encephalopathy, there is amnesia + confabulation.

 In Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, the first and most affected area in the brain is the corpus mamillare.
