Eosinophilic Esophagitis


• It is an allergic disease induced by antigens in certain foods in atopic people and is seen especially in children and young adults.
• Dysphagia and food obsession are common.
• Atypical chest pain and retrosternal burning unresponsive to PPIs may occur.
• Esophageal rings (trachea-like esophagus) may be seen on endoscopy.
• Eosinophilic infiltration is typical in biopsy. Peripheral eosinophilia may be seen in patients.
• PPI may be given for treatment (which also excludes reflux-related symptoms).
• The most commonly used treatment is steroids.
