Diplopia (Double Vision)

If there is a shift in the axis of the eye for any reason, the recording of the images in the brain does not overlap and double vision occurs.

Classification

Binocular diplopia:

Double vision disappears when the intact eye is closed. The reasons can be listed as follows:

1. Myopathies such as Kearns Sayre syndrome, oculopharyngeal myopathy, myotonic dystrophy

2. Diseases such as diabetes, atherosclerosis, which affect the 3rd, 4th and 6th nerves that provide the movement of the eye muscles

3. Restrictive strabismus such as thyroid ophthalmopathy, orbital pseudotumor, orbital mass, trauma

4. Conditions that put pressure on the optic nerves, such as a brain tumor, aneurysm in the brain vessels

5. Supranuclear disorders such as convection paralysis

6. Diseases such as tumors, atherosclerosis, multiple sclerosis that affect the nuclei and control centers in the brain stem


Monocular diplopia:

It describes double vision that continues even when the healthy eye is closed. Reasons:

1. Displacement of the lens of the eye

2. Astigmatism

3. Anterior segment pathologies such as cataracts

4. Retinal problems

5. Psychogenic
