Anatomy of the eyelid and the lacrimal glands

The outer surfaces of the eyelids are covered with skin, and the inner surfaces are covered by the conjunctiva.

Between the skin and the conjunctiva are fibrous tarsal layers, orbital septum, upper lid elevators (levator muscle, levator aponeurosis, and Müller muscle), and lower lid retractors (inferior rectus fascia and inferior tarsal muscle).

The levator muscle is innervated by the third cranial nerve, the Müller muscle and the inferior tarsal muscle by the sympathetic nerves.

The orbicularis muscle, innervated by the 7th cranial nerve, closes the palpebral space.

lacrimal system

secretory part

It consists of the lacrimal gland (glandula lacrimalis) and auxiliary lacrimal glands.

Lacrimal Gland

It is located in the shallow recess in the orbital portion of the frontal bone.

Auxiliary Glands

The Wolfring and Krause glands, which are accessory lacrimal glands, are located on the proximal margins of the eyelid or in the fornix and constitute 10% of the entire lacrimal system.

collector part

It consists of puncta, canaliculi, lacrimal sac, and nasolacrimal duct.
